Dear Film Fan,

Welcome and thanks for your interest in BMFI's education programs.  I want to take this opportunity to let you know a bit about why I chose some of the film education classes we’ll be offering in the coming months.  We’ve just announced our courses for the summer, and you should definitely check back periodically to see what courses we’ve added, or to learn about our other education initiatives.

June will see BMFI's first course on the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock: The Early Years. In it, we'll explore some of the very interesting films (like Rebecca) Hitch made before he truly earned his nickname with such classics as Rear Window and North by Northwest.

July will bring a little Gothic romance to your summer with Symphony of Horrors: Dracula in Literature and Film. This character looms large in both forms, and the class will discuss his Gothic origins and explore why he continues to haunt the artistic imagination.

In September, we once again have our introductory course, The Language of Film, to initiate (or re-initiate) you into the world of film grammar, including cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene, and editing.  In addition, an all-new run of our Film History Discussion Series: 1945-Present begins, offering the opportunity to explore some of the key film movements and genres of the postwar era in a casual, interactive format.

Visit the pages for each of these courses to get a better sense of what they will cover, and look around the education page itself for links to descriptions of past (and perhaps future) courses and other interesting links (with more to come).

Thanks again for your interest in BMFI education programs and for your support of Bryn Mawr Film Institute.  I hope to see you in class or at the movies.

Andrew J. Douglas, Ph.D.
Director of Education, Bryn Mawr Film Institute
