Current and Upcoming Courses: September September - December September Saturday, September 26 October |
Dear Film Fan, Welcome and thanks for your interest in BMFI's education programs. I want to take this opportunity to let you know a bit about why I chose some of the film education classes we’ll be offering in the coming months. We’ve just announced our courses for the fall of 2009, and you should definitely check back periodically to see what courses we’ve added, or to learn about our other education initiatives. In July, I'll be teaching Hitchcock at the Height, a course that delves into the Master of Suspense's most famous and most thought-provoking films. As part of the course, each of the four classic Hitchcock films being discussed will be screened in our theater in a brand-new, high definition, digital transfer. After taking a break from courses in August, we come roaring back in September with a variety of offerings, including the return of our flagship course, The Language of Film, which is available for Act 48 credit for the first time thanks to our partnership with the University of the Arts. Don't worry, if you're already fluent, there's a new run of the Film History Discussion Series: 1945-Present, with a different roster of important films from the last 65 years of world cinema. Also, we'll have the one-day Seminar: Master Directors, which features three of our favorite instructors (and me) discussing and showing clips from the work of four distinctive filmmakers: Preston Sturges, Elia Kazan, Akira Kurosawa, and Bernardo Bertolucci. Also this fall, BMFI will be offering two courses in Center City at the Gershman Y. The first is Moguls, Mensches, and Nudniks: Jews and American Cinema, which explores the complex and specific contributions made by Jewish Americans to their country's film industry. Following this class, there will be Singin' on Screen: The Musical, which takes a look at westerns. Actually, it's all about the musical genre in film, but I wanted to see if you were paying attention. You'll also notice that starting with our July course, the tuition for non-members has increased. We have not raised the enrollment fees for our classes since we began offering them in 2005, and they will remain at the same level they've always been for all of our members. If you're a current BMFI member--at any level--your tuition will not go up. Basic members will pay the same tuition they always have, and producer-level members and above will enjoy the same additional discounts they have always received. If you're not a member, now is a great time to join. In addition to paying the lower rate of course tuition, members receive heavily discounted admission to our films, and several other benefits. You can learn more about membership and sign up here. Also, please visit the pages for each of these courses to get a better sense of what they will cover, and look around the education page itself for links to descriptions of past (and perhaps future) courses and other interesting links (with more to come). Thanks again for your interest in BMFI education programs and for your support of Bryn Mawr Film Institute. I hope to see you in class or at the movies. Andrew J. Douglas, Ph.D.
