This course examines four films made and released in Britain over a twelve-year period characterized by economic turbulence, revolutionary ideology, and unwavering brutality: Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom (1960), Roman Polanski’s Repulsion (1965), Nicholas Roeg’s Performance (1970), and Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange (1971). Each is distinctive for its examination of cultural and ideological mores and its consideration of their potential impact on the well-being of the individual. The films creatively reflect and explore the effects of alienation, counter-cultural lifestyles, and urban decay, among other contemporary issues.

A discussion of these films and their context would not be complete without an examination of the role played by the British Board of Film Censors (BBFC), the governmental entity mandated to review, classify, censor, and, when deemed necessary, ban films intended for commercial release within the British Isles. Consequently, the course also considers the ways such censorship boards balance the competing agendas of political, public, and creative factions. The turbulence of the era explored in this course would ultimately have grave implications, not just for film censorship, but also for filmmaking, in the United Kingdom and beyond.
