As Marshal Will Kane (Gary Cooper) prepares to swap his guns for a life with his new bride (Grace Kelly), word arrives that the fearsome Miller Gang are out for his neck—and due in town on the twelve o’clock train. As the clock ticks down in real time and composer Dimitri Tiomkin’s “The Ballad of High Noon” intones forebodingly, Kane’s would-be allies fade away, leaving the marshal to face the gang on his own. Made at the height of the Red Scare, High Noon’s depiction of a community’s breakdown sparked a wave of serious-minded westerns commenting on American society.
