Cartoonist Matt Furie created Pepe the Frog as a quirky, good-natured character in his indie comic book Boys Club. During the build-up to the 2016 election, to Furie’s surprise and increasing horror, Pepe was adopted as an icon by online message boards and turned into a toxic symbol of hate. Recounting the surreal journey of Pepe the Frog and his creator’s attempt to reclaim him, this stranger-than-fiction documentary paints a vivid picture of contemporary internet culture and its ability to sway politics.
