Jean Renoir’s humanist masterpiece was borrowed from by Casablanca, dubbed “Cinema Public Enemy No. 1” by the Nazis, and declared worth preserving “on the ark” by Orson Welles. As WWI decimates Europe, three French soldiers in a German POW camp strike up a camaraderie with their captors.
