Harold and Maude

And the Award Goes To…
(PG) USA – 1 hr 31 min
1971 · d. Hal Ashby
Starring Ruth Gordon, Bud Cort, Vivian Pickles

Harold (Bud Cort) is young, wealthy, and fixated on death. His routine of attending funerals and staging fake suicides is disrupted when he meets lively 79-year-old Maude (Ruth Gordon), sparking an unlikely friendship and romance. Drubbed by critics and snubbed by the Academy, Hal Ashby’s quirky black comedy nonetheless became (and remains) a massive cult favorite, exemplifying the era’s non-conformist ethos and the idiosyncrasy of the New Hollywood movement.

Shown in conjunction with the film course Oscar Zeitgeist: Best Picture as Cultural Barometer, this screening will be introduced by the course’s instructor, Paul Wright, Ph.D.
