Composed in the midst of WWI, Giacomo Puccini’s triptych of one-act operas—Gianni Schicchi, Il tabarro, and Suor Angelica—explores the struggle between individual fate and constraining circumstances in both comic and tragic registers. Presenting the segments in unconventional sequence, Christof Loy’s production was performed to great acclaim at the 2022 Salzburg Festival, with particular praise bestowed on soprano Asmik Grigorian’s breathtaking performance.
