“They call me Mister Tibbs!” While travelling through the Deep South, a black police detective (Sidney Poitier) is arrested on suspicion of murder. After clearing his name, he finds himself in an uneasy partnership with the town’s bigoted sheriff (Rod Steiger) on the trail of the true culprit. Tackling racial tensions head-on during the height of the civil rights era, In the Heat of the Night earned Best Picture at the 40th Academy Awards.

Shown in conjunction with the film course Oscar Zeitgeist: Best Picture as Cultural Barometer, this screening will be introduced by the course’s instructor, Paul Wright, Ph.D.
