Before the massive success of Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut revealed her as a thoughtful and humorous observer of women’s experiences. In the early 2000s, an arty teenager (Saoirse Ronan) navigates the turbulent-yet-loving relationship with her mother (Laurie Metcalf) as she tries to find her way in the world.
