Reviews

This pair of rarely screened non-fiction shorts reveals the influences and preoccupations—Italian identity, Catholicism, crime, survival, masculinity—that would shape Scorsese’s iconic features. “Italianamerican” (1974)—“the best thing I’ve ever done,” said Scorsese—captures the director’s parents as they reflect on the New York immigrant experience. “American Boy” (1978) documents an evening with the titular raconteur as he spins incredible tales of his misadventures in showbiz and the underworld—one of which inspired Pulp Fiction’s most iconic scene.
