When Ellis Haizlip launched the variety show SOUL! on New York City public television, there was nothing else like it. From 1968 to 1973, the program became a hugely popular, groundbreaking platform for Black arts and intellectual life, despite opposition from the Nixon administration. Featuring literary luminaries (James Baldwin, Maya Angelou), political figures (Kathleen Cleaver, Stokely Carmichael), musicians (Stevie Wonder, Al Green), and many more, this documentary tells the story of America’s first “Black Tonight Show.”
