“There are no bars on these prisons.” Originally released in 1951, this adaptation of Richard Wright’s seminal novel features the author himself as Bigger Thomas, a Black chauffeur on the run from the law. Newly restored and re-released, Native Son uses the conventions of film noir to expose the injustices affecting African American urban life.
The film is preceded by a special introduction by film historians Eddie Muller and Jacqueline Najuma Stewart, courtesy of Turner Classic Movies.
