1924 · d. Carl Theodor Dreyer – with subtitles

In this silent drama from the director of The Passion of Joan of Arc, the loving relationship between an ailing painter and his muse is disrupted by the arrival of a bankrupt countess.

Mädchen in Uniform
1931 · d. Leontine Sagan – with subtitles

A passionate love affair blossoms between a student and a teacher at a repressive boarding school in this Weimar-era lesbian classic.

Victor and Victoria
1933 · d. Reinhold Schünzel – with subtitles

A down-on-her-luck singer becomes a cabaret star when she poses as a man performing in drag. Akin to the innuendo-laden comedies of Ernst Lubitsch and Billy Wilder, this gender-bending musical romp served as source material for the 1982 Julie Andrews vehicle Victor/Victoria.
