After inheriting his grandmother’s colorful West Philadelphia rowhouse—along with her collection of books and records—Julien and his friends form a leftist collective, dubbed the House of Ubuntu. As they flesh out what collective living means, the group explores the traditions of African American art-making and political thought—especially the history of MOVE, a Black liberation group whose own compound was bombed by the Philadelphia Police in 1985. Riffing on Jean-Luc Godard’s La Chinoise (1967), this bold, playful genre-bender spins together narrative, documentary, archival footage, interviews, and more into a kaleidoscopic celebration of Black artistry and activism.
