Philadelphia Stories
(NR) USA – 1 hr 30 min
1996 · d. Cheryl Dunye
Starring Cheryl Dunye, Guinevere Turner, Valerie Walker, Camille Paglia
When a Philadelphia filmmaker sets out to uncover the identity and story of a ’30s Black actress credited only as “The Watermelon Woman,” she discovers startling parallels to her own life. At once a rom-com, mockumentary, and historical excavation, The Watermelon Woman made history as the first American feature directed by a Black lesbian and endures as a major work of the New Queer Cinema movement.
