Over the course of a single afternoon, a country pastor (Gunnar Björnstrand) finds his faith shaken by “God's silence” after failing to console a parishioner (Max von Sydow) terrified by the threat of nuclear war. Immaculately structured and stunningly photographed, the formal rigor of Bergman's early '60s period reaches an apex in the second installment of his faith cycle. Considered by the director to be his most successful film, Winter Light also provided crucial inspiration for the recent arthouse favorite First Reformed.
Shown in conjunction with the film course Through a Lens Darkly: Mid-Century Bergman, Winter Light will be introduced by the course’s instructor, Maurizio Giammarco, Ph.D.
