Ousted from a travelling circus, a young boy (Shafiq Syed) takes up residence in Bombay's red-light district, hoping to earn enough money to return home. Taken under the wing of a desperate teenage hoodlum (Raghubir Yadav), he falls in with a cohort of street urchins, hustlers, and crooks, finding community—and deepening trouble. Shot on location using untrained child actors from the Bombay slums, this feature debut from Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding, Queen of Katwe) won the Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Shown in conjunction with the film course Celluloid Cities II: International Cityscapes, this screening will be introduced by the course's instructor, Paul Wright, Ph.D.
