Renouncing her family and her roots, naive geisha Cio Cio San marries American naval officer Pinkerton, only to be abandoned when her new husband's ship departs. Learning that Pinkerton will be returning to Japan, she desperately awaits their reunion, unaware that he has started a new family in the United States. Director Mario Gas sets Puccini's enduring drama in a 1930s film studio, narrating the drama from three simultaneous perspectives: the opera itself, the film being made of the opera, and its projection in black and white on a large screen.
