Suddenly, Last Summer
Joseph L. Mankiewicz: Fasten Your Seatbelts
(NR) UK/USA – 1 hr 54 min
1959 · d. Joseph L. Mankiewicz Reviews
Starring Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, Montgomery Clift
Wealthy New Orleans widow Violet Venable (Katharine Hepburn) promises a hefty contribution to the clinic of a young surgeon (Montgomery Clift) under one condition—he must perform a lobotomy on her supposedly insane niece, Catherine (Elizabeth Taylor). But the doctor soon realizes that Catherine may not be mad at all, and instead holds a secret regarding the death of Mrs. Venable’s son. Adapted by Gore Vidal from Tennessee Williams’s play, Suddenly, Last Summer
is Southern Gothic at its most exhilarating and gloriously overheated.
