Founded outside Philadelphia as an institutional home for the developmentally disabled, the Pennhurst State School and Hospital was marked by decades of scandals involving abuse, neglect, and misconduct. The eventual investigation led to rulings and reforms that would be landmarks in the movement for disability rights. Using archival footage and interviews with residents and employees, this documentary tells the story of Pennhurst and the people who lived there.
Following the screening, stay for a discussion with Dr. James Conroy, Jean Searle, Ed Goldman, and Dr. Dennis Downey, of the Pennhurst Memorial & Preservation Alliance.
