EVEN DWARFS STARTED SMALL

Werner Herzog: In Search of Ecstatic Truth
(NR) West Germany – 1 hr 36 min – with subtitles
1970 · d. Werner Herzog
Reviews
Starring Helmut Döring, Paul Glauer, Gisela Hertwig

On an island institution populated only by little people, the inmates revolt against their captors, but their rebellion quickly gives way to pandemonium and barbarity. Bizarre even by the standards of its madman director, this Kafkaesque allegory of institutional oppression introduces themes that Werner Herzog would develop throughout his career.

This screening will be presented in conjunction with the film course “Lessons of Darkness”: Werner Herzog’s Absurdist Studies in the Human Condition, taught by Paul Wright, Ph.D. Seating for screening-only attendees will begin at 7:00 pm.
