In this installment of his ongoing series, collector/curator Jay Schwartz presents a program of local “ephemeral” shorts made for the non-theatrical market, granting glimpses of bygone Philadelphias and celebrating unseen corners of its cinematic legacy. To-be-presented shorts include:
“They Do Come Back” (1940) – Directed by Hollywood auteur Edgar Ulmer (Detour) for the National Tuberculosis Association, this short dramatizes the tale of a young couple whose first kiss leads to the boy coughing up blood, but he soon learns how to treat his problem.
“20 to the 3rd Power” (1967) – Produced by the Documentary Film Laboratory of Penn’s Annenberg School, this somewhat experimental student work finds a group of fashionable young people exploring a lively Philadelphia of new architecture and expressways…though foreboding radio reports of the Vietnam War are never too far off.
“Philadelphia Celebrates” (1975) – This short film documents a giant outdoor fair called “Old City Sunday,” complete with carnival rides, dance troupes, colonial re-enactors, Frank Rizzo, Mummers, a funk band, and more.
Plus more! This program will be projected entirely from 16mm film.
