If the ‘40s and ‘50s established American noir’s foundational themes and aesthetics, subsequent generations pointed those tropes toward the concerns of their own times, to clever, subversive, and postmodern ends. This “Noirvember,” we trace the development of the form through the New Hollywood era and into the 1990s.
