Cinema Classics Seminar: 12 Angry Men

We Need To Talk: Conversation on Film
Wednesday, September 17, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Instructor: Amy Corbin, Ph.D., Muhlenberg College

When thinking about iconic trial movies, 12 Angry Men (1957) is among the first that comes to mind. Yet it is utterly distinct from most other films of the genre because it is entirely focused on jury deliberations rather than courtroom arguments. Its restrained style and single location could have made it uncinematic but instead created a powerful and beloved film. This seminar will investigate why.

12 Angry Men was Sidney Lumet’s directorial debut, and it represents a counter-current to the brightly colored epic films popular in the 1950s. However, its most important legacy is probing the ethical underpinnings of the American legal system, and by implication, American ideals of equal opportunity for all citizens. A jury of twelve white men, meant to represent a “cross section” of American society, carefully weigh evidence and probe the significance of a person’s social background to their guilt or innocence. Lumet holds our attention through his use of camera angles and movement to dramatize the men’s personalities and interpersonal tensions. Visually, we are confined to a single room, yet the dialogue and urban soundscape subtly remind us of the debate’s wider context. Ultimately, 12 Angry Men argues that justice comes not from fiery lawyers’ speeches and dramatic witness testimony, but from ordinary people given the responsibility of determining another’s fate.

Cinema Classics Seminars offer an entertaining and engaging way to learn more about some of the true classics of world cinema. All students receive an introductory lecture before the film and a guided discussion after the film. In addition, those in attendance receive a ticket to see it on the big screen, as well as popcorn and a drink. Please note: the screening associated with this seminar will be open to the public, as well.
