Cinema Classics Seminar: 42nd Street

BMFI 100
Thursday, March 26, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Instructor: Andrew J. Douglas, Ph.D., Deputy Director, BMFI

Audiences during the Great Depression had little interest in seeing the misery of the period reflected back at them from a movie screen, and so it became an era of glorious song-and-dance films. Among them 42nd Street, a massive hit in 1933 that is a near perfect example of the backstage musical.

At its core, this is the story of a seasoned performer caught between two men and a young ingenue dreaming of stardom. But while this is escapism at its best, the Depression is a backdrop for characters who have either been ruined in the stock market crash or who need a big break to get ahead. Everyone is aware of the stakes of making it or not, which adds to both the drama and the romantic intrigue as stage directors, dancers, and financiers jockey for position and influence. Of course, we’re here for the show numbers, too. Choreographer Busby Berkeley was key to the visual style of many ‘30s musicals, and he creates a range of visual marvels here, breaking free of the boundaries of the stage and letting the audience escape the perspective of a theater seat.

42nd Street was added to the National Film Registry in 1998, and in 1980 inspired a Tony-winning stage musical of its own that has since become a repertory staple. In our seminar, we’ll consider the ways in which a film very much of its time has managed to have a life far beyond what its producers could ever have imagined.

Are you interested in “just” seeing this movie? Visit the public screening page here.

Cinema Classics Seminars offer an entertaining and engaging way to learn more about some of the true classics of world cinema. All students receive an introductory lecture before the film and a guided discussion after the film. In addition, those in attendance receive a ticket to see it on the big screen, as well as popcorn and a drink. Please note: the screening associated with this seminar will be open to the public, as well.
