Cinema Classics Seminar: Glengarry Glen Ross

We Need To Talk: Conversation on Film
Monday, November 3, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Instructor: Andrew Owen, Ph.D., Lebanon Valley College

“Second prize is a set of steak knives . . . ” Director James Foley and screenwriter David Mamet adapted Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) from the latter’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, originally performed two years into the Reagan presidency. The work serves as an unflinching indictment of the American Dream’s destruction by corporate greed and a twisted interpretation of Darwin’s natural selection. It depicts a social reality dominated by a simple ABC formula (“Always Be Closing”), where equality and community are sacrificed on the altar of competition, and power is utilized solely to coerce, exploit, and degrade.

Join us as we examine Mamet’s most famous work, exploring its vibrancy and relevance for the early decades of the twenty-first century. Together, we’ll analyze its portrayal of a social model where fear is the driving force behind all human endeavor, and time is weaponized by an unmerciful oligarchy driving the masses toward their own destruction.

Cinema Classics Seminars offer an entertaining and engaging way to learn more about some of the true classics of world cinema. All students receive an introductory lecture before the film and a guided discussion after the film. In addition, those in attendance receive a ticket to see it on the big screen, as well as popcorn and a drink. Please note: the screening associated with this seminar will be open to the public, as well.
