What’s an ambitious young man (James Stewart) to do when the girl of his dreams (Jean Arthur) belongs to a family of misfits and oddballs? Perhaps he might begin by taking a closer look at the values espoused by his own disdainful clan.
As his directorial career gained momentum, Frank Capra set his sights on the Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway comedy about love and family (and the IRS). Equal parts romantic screwball farce and Depression-era fantasy on domestic themes, Capra also uses this beloved film adaptation to ask fundamental questions about what America stands for and whom it represents—the propertied and complacent or the eccentrics and dreamers. In a world where everybody’s got an “ism” they’re ready to fight over, perhaps Capra’s warm, whimsical, and subversive film is just what we need to begin the year.
