Starring Toshirô Mifune, Takashi Shimura, Keiko Awaji

When his pistol is stolen on a crowded bus, a brash police detective (Toshirô Mifune) and his commanding officer (Takashi Shimura) set out to recover the weapon, leading them through Tokyo's black markets, dancehalls, and flophouses, into the depths of its criminal underworld. In this noirish early masterpiece, Kurosawa authentically captured the city's gritty post-war atmosphere, surreptitiously shooting on location with unsuspecting extras.

Shown in conjunction with the film course Celluloid Cities II: International Cityscapes, this screening will be introduced by the course's instructor, Paul Wright, Ph.D.
