Known as “the green heart of Italy,” Umbria (located East of Tuscany) is graced with luscious, rolling hills, olive groves, and vineyards. The region is rich in art, culture, and history.
Perched on the edge of a small village, this impeccably restored luxury farmhouse offers a true taste of la dolce vita. La Casetta is a spacious little home with a whimsical nod to Italian design of the 1970s. The house has two bedrooms, two large baths, and an eat-in kitchen.
For the first time, BMFI is offering a second-place prize—a cornucopia of Italian-themed treats, staycation experiences, thematic tidbits, and some help planning your own future Italian getaway. The Main Line is a location rich for exploration, and this package will help guide you to new discoveries in your own backyard.

Far from the humid and crowded highways of the Greater Philadelphia region, the emerald hills and preserved medieval towns of Umbria await. When would you answer their call? The green and gorgeous spring, before peak tourist season but with the hills ablaze in wildflowers? The hot and sultry summer, when afternoon naps are essential, and you might take in a nearby jousting tournament or watch an al fresco performance of opera or ballet? The less-crowded and mild Fall, when grape and olive picking is at full swing under clear blue skies and Europe’s largest chocolate celebration takes place? Or, would you brave the chillier winter months, when you can experience the un-touristed “real Italy” and celebrate the region’s famous truffles? No matter when you go, you can treat yourself to a quiet and immersive traditional Italian experience, traveling small winding roads through beautiful rolling hills, relishing the region’s farm-to-table cuisine, and sampling some of the best wines in Italy. Your lodgings for seven nights are at the impeccably restored luxury farmhouse, La Casetta, (comfortably fitting four guests in its two bedrooms, two large baths, and an eat-in kitchen). The grounds also feature a pool to enjoy in the warmer months. And, $1000 in spending cash is included in your prize.
And now, as part of this trip, BMFI is able to offer a special day in one of the most beautiful hilltop towns in Italy, Deruta, which dates back to the Middle Ages and is just 15 minutes from your villa. Deruta is most famous for creating some of the best examples of the glazed and hand-painted pottery known as majolica. Bryn Mawr’s Via Bellissima, the Main Line’s own source for this colorful pottery, has arranged for our winner to tour a favorite factory, Fima Deruta, where the owner will explain how this striking pottery is handmade – and what to look for when purchasing authentic examples. (You may arrange to have items shipped back to either to Via Bellissima or your home.) Find some favorites there, then wander the town and visit more than 200 additional shops sporting both antiques and the work of these cottage industries. And don’t forget to have lunch, visit Deruta’s picture gallery, ceramics museum and churches, or simply wander the medieval streets.

Grand Prize Rules:Drawing to be held no later than September 1, 2023. Need not be present to win. BMFI will contact the winner. Winner will finalize trip arrangements with Villa Vacations. The winner can elect to book any available time period from September 2023, until October 2024. Once booked, villa is non-transferable. Property has many stairs and may not be recommended for guests with walking difficulties. Lodging for up to 4 guests and $1,000 spending cash is included. Airfare and expenses (other than lodging) are not included. Additional services available for an extra fee: additional maid service, cooking service, babysitting, grocery shopping, car service, etc. Winner is responsible for refundable security deposit of $1200, due on arrival and returned at end of stay (less damages). There is no smoking in the villa. Directors and employees of BMFI are not eligible.
2nd Prize Rules: Drawing to be held no later than September 1, 2023. Need not be present to win. BMFI will contact the winner. Winner will be responsible for claiming the prize in person at BMFI. There are no substitutions, and the prize has no cash value. The respective donors of the goods and services are responsible for providing the services/items indicated. BMFI is not responsible for any of the services/items beyond the initial transfer of the raffle prize to its recipient. Directors and employees of BMFI are not eligible.
