Departing from Marius Petipa’s cozy Christmastime rendition of The Nutcracker, this bold production from Christian Spuck and Ballet Zürich harkens back to the dark romantic fantasy of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s source text. Here, the workshop of the godfather Drosselmeier turns into an old revue-theater where the characters of the ballet come to life, while Spuck’s choreography channels the richness, absurdity, and uncanny atmosphere of Hoffmann’s novella.
