For immediate release – Bryn Mawr, PA – Writer/director Whit Stillman (Love & Friendship, The Last Days of Disco) will be in attendance in-theater at Bryn Mawr Film Institute on Wednesday, September 28, at 7:15 pm, for a screening of his Oscar-nominated debut feature, Metropolitan (1990), followed by a post-film conversation and audience Q&A.
At once a sparkling comedy of manners, a poignant coming-of-age story, and a New York fairytale, Metropolitan’s hilarious and razor-sharp dialogue earned Stillman an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Made on a shoestring budget with unknown actors, the film became a hit, helping to launch the 1990s independent film movement and paving the way for the films of Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach.
Metropolitan will show at BMFI on Wednesday, September 28, at 7:15 pm. Whit Stillman, director, producer, and Academy Award-nominated screenwriter will join us in the theater for a post-film conversation and audience Q&A.

Whit Stillman is an American writer-director and actor known for his 1990 film Metropolitan, which earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He is also known for his other films, Barcelona (1994), The Last Days of Disco (1998), Damsels in Distress (2011), as well as his most recent film, Love & Friendship, released in 2016.
When a mix-up lands him in a cab with upper-crust misanthrope Nick Smith, college student/self-described proletarian Tom Townsend is drawn into a circle of young Manhattan socialites and finds himself in an odd relationship with Jane Austen-acolyte Audrey Rouget. Hilarious, poignant, and intensely quotable, this sparkling comedy of manners stands among the high points of ‘90s American independent cinema and earned writer/director Whit Stillman (Love & Friendship, The Last Days of Disco) an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
