9 to 5 was released in 1980, but it reflected the major changes in the workforce that occurred during the ’70s. Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton star as three savvy employees of a misogynistic boss. When their fantasies about his demise accidentally become a reality, they must work together to stay out of trouble. In the process, they show their office—and viewers—how changes to the workforce that support women actually support everyone, shifting from satire to feminist fable.
Although originally conceived of as a drama, the film was rewritten and directed by Colin Higgins (writer of Harold and Maude), examining the perils of women returning to the workforce while resisting heavy-handed social critique. In the process, all three women reflect and refract their public images in playful ways. Despite mixed reviews, the film has become a pop culture touchpoint, launching Parton to big-screen fame and facilitating her hit song.
This seminar will explore the complexities in the film’s representation of women in the workforce and the gender pay gap, as well as the use of comedy to address social concerns. We’ll also look at the real-world connections between the film’s content and the feminist movements of the ‘70s and ‘80s, including Fonda’s connection in the 9to5 Organization.
