In 19th-century New York, a lovelorn heiress-to-be falls for a dashing but penniless suitor (Montgomery Clift). Are his proclamations of love sincere, or is he just out for money? Director William Wyler claimed “the emotion and conflict between two people in a drawing room can be as exciting as a gun battle.” So it proves to be.
This screening will be introduced by writer/film historian Karina Longworth. After the film, she’ll discuss the new season of her podcast, You Must Remember This, launching on September 15.
That season, called “The Bisexuals,” tells the story of torch singer—and accused murderess —Libby Holman, and her sexually-fluid group of friends and lovers from the 1920s to the end of the 1960s, which included Montgomery Clift, Tallulah Bankhead, Josephine Baker, Nicholas Ray and many more.
