Cinema Classics Seminar: Casablanca

Tuesday, September 1, 2026, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Instructor: Jacob Mazer, Director of Programs and Education, BMFI

Casablanca (1942) has often been described as the single greatest vindication of the American studio system, a case where the project’s movement through the various stations of an industrial filmmaking process elevated what might have been a by-the-numbers romantic intrigue into a canon classic. But as much as it embodies the Classical Hollywood paradigm, Casablanca also (appropriately) serves as a kind of cultural waystation, a mark of changing American attitudes and commitments, as well as its understanding (and imagination) of itself.

We’ll trace those currents as we tell Casablanca’s story, considering its status as an immigration tale, its engagement with America’s entry into WWII (which is a bit more complicated than most tellings would have it), and its framing of its African American character, Sam. We’ll pay particular attention to the film’s place in the careers of its two principals, Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, and its role in shaping their star personas and establishing broader pop culture archetypes.

Together, we’ll look at what makes Casablanca such an enduring work while examining this endlessly rewatchable classic from a new angle.

Are you interested in “just” seeing this movie? Visit the public screening page here.

Cinema Classics Seminars offer an entertaining and engaging way to learn more about some of the true classics of world cinema. All students receive an introductory lecture before the film and a guided discussion after the film. In addition, those in attendance receive a ticket to see it on the big screen, as well as popcorn and a drink. Please note: the screening associated with this seminar will be open to the public, as well.

Please contact BMFI Programs and Education Manager Jill Malcolm with any questions.
