Facing economic ruin following the Civil War, Texas rancher Tom Dunson (John Wayne) elects to lead his 10,000 head of cattle on a punishing drive to Missouri. Amid rising tensions with his exhausted ranch hands, Dunson's authority is challenged by his surrogate son (Montgomery Clift), beginning a cycle of rivalry and retribution worthy of Greek tragedy.
