Stop Making Sense

Once in a Lifetime: Jonathan Demme in the 1980s
(NR) USA – 1 hr 28 min
1984 · d. Jonathan Demme   Reviews
Starring David Byrne, Bernie Worrell, Alex Weir

Widely considered one of the greatest rock films of all time, Stop Making Sense captures the innovative art-rock band Talking Heads, fronted by the legendary David Byrne. Filmed over three nights at the Hollywood Pantages Theater in 1983, director Demme chose to set the cameras as far from the stage as possible so as not to interfere with the elaborate staging and unique artistic elements of the concert. Opening on a sparse stage with only Byrne and a boombox, the band and the arrangements (not to mention Byrne’s suit) build to remarkable heights in this extraordinarily original and expertly crafted film.

Shown in conjunction with the film course Once in a Lifetime: Jonathan Demme in the 1980s, each film in this series will be introduced by the course’s instructor, Lisa DeNight.
