“When men, even unknowingly, are to meet one day, whatever the diverging paths, they will inevitably come together in the red circle.” Two prisoners gain their freedom—Corey (Alain Delon) by parole, Vogel (Gian Maria Volontè) by escape. Joined by chance and pursued by the dogged Inspector Mettei (André Bourvil), they plan a jewelry-store theft that will lead each to his inevitable destiny. Established by its legendary, wordless, thirty-minute robbery sequence as a heist film of the highest order, it also transcends the genre, becoming, with its themes of fate and personal codes, a work of hyper-cool existentialism.

Shown in conjunction with the film course Dark Streets, Dark Lives: The Cinema of Jean-Pierre Melville, this screening will be introduced by the course’s instructor, Maurizio Giammarco, Ph.D.
