Swept Away: The Films of Lina Wertmüller
(R) Italy – 2 hr – with subtitles
1973 · d. Lina Wertmüller   Reviews
Starring Giancarlo Giannini, Mariangela Melato, Eros Pagni

In the first of Wertmüller’s films to open in America, Tunin, a naive farmboy drawn into an anarchist conspiracy in Fascist-era Italy, must meet with his contact Salomè, the madam of a high-end Roman brothel. His mission: to assassinate Benito Mussolini. When Tunin falls in love with the prostitute Tripolina, the plot is jeopardized in this subversive tragicomedy that plays the human need for connection against the forces of political oppression and extremism.

Shown in conjunction with the film course Swept Away: The Films of Lina Wertmüller, this screening will be introduced by the course’s instructor, Maurizio Giammarco, Ph.D.
