After mysteriously receiving an old diary chronicling a teenage love affair, an emotionally withdrawn ballerina (Maj-Britt Nilsson) travels back to the island where the romance took place to contend with its tragic end. With Summer Interlude, Ingmar Bergman came into his own as a director, coalescing many of the themes that would run through his later masterpieces: memory, identity, intimacy, and the search for transcendence.

Shown in conjunction with the film course Through a Lens Darkly: Mid-Century Bergman, Summer Interlude will be introduced by the course’s instructor, Maurizio Giammarco, Ph.D.
